Responsible for increasing company profitability via acquisitions that are consistent with the company’s reputation as a high quality, high level publisher. Involves extensive author/editor research, contact, proposal solicitation and review, contract negotiation, oversight of preparation of manuscripts for production, marketing concerns and monitoring of sales, financial oversight on projects, long-range planning for development of the individual publishing programs, and management of editorial support staff. This role is located in our New York or Jersey City office on a hybrid working model.
Specific Responsibilities
Pursues an active and efficient acquisitions policy through strategy development, research, email/telephone/video correspondence, meetings/trips within North America, consultations with thought leaders, series editors, etc.
Approximately 10% travel required as well as strong initiative and independent functioning.
Acquires book projects in several categories with the clinical medicine field, as assigned by Executive Editor.
Prepares and executes publishing agreements and related documents (e.g., amendments) and collaborates with Editorial Rights for nonstandard requests.
Maintains and develops a circle of reviewers and advisors and evaluates their judgments.
Maintains continuous cooperation and dialogue with marketing and production concerning individual projects as well as general questions of mutual interest.
Maintains communication with US and European editorial counterparts about specific immediate questions as well as long-term strategy questions.
Provides approval for final manuscripts prior to transmittal to production.
Maintains current status of all projects in the program via reporting systems and communicates status on a consistent basis via these systems to Editorial Director, Executive Editor, editorial team and others as needed (e.g., marketing and sales).
Reviews and discusses strategy, new projects and plans with Editorial Director, editorial colleagues in department and globally, particularly in overlapping areas.
Monitors staffing requirements and trains and develops staff as needed.
Performs related duties as required.
Managerial or Supervisory Responsibility
May be responsible for directing (and perhaps technically supervising) at least one support staff member, including interviewing for hire, training and development, scheduling, work distribution and performance counseling.
Contacts
Extensive in house contacts with all departments, especially editorial, production, finance, and sales/marketing.
Extensive contact with potential editors/authors (both domestically and abroad), external proposal and concept reviewers, advisors, series editors, and the general academic community in each publishing field.
Access and Accountability for Information, Materials and Equipment
Access to sales reports, budget (P&L) overviews.
Access/accountability for editorial files.
Responsible for personal computer, printers and other department office equipment.
Required Background
College degree
Experience as an editor or related editorial/publishing experience
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills required
Knowledge of PC operations, including use of Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel
Must be willing and able to travel
